The teaching of phonics is prioritised at Cottons Farm Primary Academy. A rigorous and sequential approach to the reading curriculum, using Letters and Sounds Phonics scheme, develops pupils’ fluency, confidence and enjoyment in reading.
In EYFS and in other year groups when necessary, pupils are assessed using Launch Pad for literacy. This tool allows teachers to identify important gaps in knowledge that need to be closed before pupils move onto learning letter sounds. Assessment and re-grouping takes place on a half-termly basis to ensure children do not fall behind. Additional intervention is put in place to help pupils keep up and catch up.
When necessary in KS2, pupils take part in phoncis lessons and interventions to address gaps in phonological knowledge.
